Real Betis manager Rubén Amorim has suggested that Manchester United's failure to get the best out of Antony is due to a lack of a "strong core" at the club. The Portuguese coach has been full of praise for the Brazilian winger, who has thrived on loan at Betis after struggling at Old Trafford.
Antony has been a revelation in Spain, scoring two goals and winning two Man of the Match awards in just three games. His impressive performances have been in stark contrast to his time at Manchester United, where he struggled to make an impact.
Speaking to reporters, Amorim said: "I don't know, sometimes it's like that, it can happen with any club. This club has a lot of pressure and you need to have a base of a team to put young, talented players who came from abroad to help them. If you are playing better as a team, and you have a strong core, as it is supposed to be in this club, it will be easier for this kind of player to play football."
Amorim's comments suggest that he believes Manchester United's squad lacks the experience and stability needed to nurture young, talented players. The Portuguese coach has built a strong team at Betis, and he believes that this has been key to Antony's success.
Antony's move to Betis has been a huge success. The Brazilian winger has been a constant threat to opposition defenses, and his ability to beat defenders and create chances has made him a fan favorite at the Benito Villamarín.
Manchester United have struggled to find consistency since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. The club has gone through a number of managers and has failed to win a Premier League title since 2013. Antony is just one of a number of high-profile players who have failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford in recent years.
Other former United players have also found success elsewhere. Scott McTominay has been a key player for Napoli this season, while Anthony Elanga has impressed at Nottingham Forest.
With his contract at Manchester United set to expire in 2026, Antony's future is uncertain. If he continues to impress at Betis, it is likely that a number of top clubs will be interested in signing him. However, it remains to be seen whether Manchester United will be willing to sell one of their most expensive signings.
