Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has revealed a fascinating insight into his decision to join the Red Devils back in 2008. In a recent interview, the Bulgarian revealed that Manchester City had also made a late bid for his signature on the final day of the transfer window, but he had no hesitation in choosing Old Trafford.
"Manchester City wanted to sign me on the last day of the transfer window," Berbatov said. "I told my agent, 'F*** off, we're going to United.' It was about the history, the prestige, the players, the manager, the shirt. I never doubted that Old Trafford was the right decision."
Berbatov's decision to snub City in favor of United was a bold one, given the rapid progress that the Citizens were making under the ownership of Sheikh Mansour. However, the Bulgarian was adamant that he wanted to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and he believed that Manchester United was the perfect fit for him.
"If I want to play for the money, I would accept the Manchester City offer or Chelsea," Berbatov said at the time. "The red shirt is the really big thing for me. I want to play for the biggest club in the world. I am 27 now, I am at the biggest club in the world and maybe this could be the last step in my career. My dream was to come here, now I can see how the biggest stars are working and I can compare myself to the best."
Berbatov's decision to join United proved to be a wise one. The Bulgarian quickly established himself as a fans' favorite, and his elegant style of play made him a joy to watch. He played a key role in United's Premier League title win in 2008-09, and his acrobatic goal against Liverpool in the same season is still regarded as one of the greatest goals ever scored at Old Trafford.
A lasting legacy
Although Berbatov's time at United was relatively short, his impact on the club was significant. His decision to choose United over City is a testament to the club's enduring appeal, and it is a story that will be told for years to come.
