David Beckham, a name synonymous with footballing excellence, has weighed in on the age-old debate of who is the greatest player of all time. The former England captain, who graced the fields for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, among others, has shared his thoughts on the matter, and his choice may surprise a few.
Beckham's illustrious 21-year career saw him share the pitch with some of the most iconic figures in football history. From his early days at Manchester United, where he formed part of the famed "Class of '92", to his time at Real Madrid alongside the "Galácticos", Beckham played alongside a plethora of legendary players.
His journey also took him to AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, further exposing him to a wealth of talent. Given the calibre of players he shared both club and international dressing rooms with, his choice for the best player he's ever seen was highly anticipated.
In a recent appearance on Gary Neville's show "The Overlap", Beckham was put on the spot. Asked to name the best player he's ever seen, he didn't hesitate. "Apart from you," he jokingly said to Neville, before definitively stating, "Zidane is the best player I've ever played with."
Zidane's inclusion in any "greatest of all time" conversation is hardly surprising. The Frenchman's grace, skill, and vision on the ball were unparalleled. He orchestrated play with an effortless elegance that few have matched, and his contributions to both club and country are the stuff of legend.
Beckham's personal experience of playing alongside Zidane for three years at Real Madrid undoubtedly played a role in his decision. The two formed a formidable partnership on the right flank, combining their talents to create countless scoring opportunities.
What may have raised eyebrows, however, was the omission of some of Beckham's legendary Manchester United teammates. Players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Roy Keane, who shared so much success with Beckham at Old Trafford, were not mentioned.
This isn't to say that Beckham doesn't rate his United colleagues highly. It simply highlights the immense respect he has for Zidane and the impact the Frenchman had on his career.
Beckham's choice is a testament to Zidane's enduring legacy. Even among a generation of supremely talented footballers, Zidane stood out as a player of exceptional quality. His name is synonymous with footballing artistry, and his influence on the game continues to be felt today.
Beckham's words serve as a reminder of the magic that Zidane brought to the pitch. He was a player who could make the extraordinary look effortless, and his performances were a joy to behold.
