Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hit back at critics of his team's recent struggles, insisting that his side has not fallen as far as some of their rivals.
Speaking to the media after his side's latest disappointing result, Guardiola pointed to the example of Manchester United. "Maybe we'll finish 14th or 15th, but we're fifth. We're not falling like other teams that have had success in the past," he said. "One bad year in 8-9 seasons, it can happen. Have you seen Liverpool this season? They won't get 100 points, that's for sure. Maybe 99, but not 100. And still, look at the season they've had. That made me realize, 'Wow, what we've achieved!'"
Guardiola's comments have sparked debate among fans and pundits alike. While some have praised the manager for his honesty and perspective, others have criticized him for taking a dig at a rival club.
There's no doubt that this season has been a challenging one for Manchester City. The club has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent performances, and their title hopes have been all but dashed. However, Guardiola has remained defiant, insisting that his team will bounce back.
Guardiola's comparison to Manchester United was a clear attempt to put his team's struggles into perspective. While United have also experienced a difficult period in recent years, Guardiola believes that City's overall record under his management is far superior.
The Spaniard's comments have also been seen as a subtle dig at his former rival, José Mourinho, who has struggled to achieve sustained success at United since taking over from Guardiola at Manchester City.
