Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ambitious overhaul of Manchester United has hit a significant roadblock following the sudden departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth. The billionaire businessman, who acquired a minority stake in the club earlier this year, had brought in a host of footballing experts to revamp the Red Devils' recruitment strategy.
Ashworth's arrival was seen as a major coup for United, with the club reportedly paying Newcastle United a hefty compensation package to secure his services. However, his stay at Old Trafford proved to be short-lived, with reports suggesting he left amid power struggles with fellow executives.
In the wake of Ashworth's exit, Ratcliffe has opted for a more collaborative approach, tasking CEO Omar Berrada, technical director Jason Wilcox, and INEOS' Sir Dave Brailsford with the responsibilities traditionally associated with a sporting director.
However, the changes at Old Trafford have not been met with universal approval. Former United chief scout Mick Brown has been particularly vocal in his criticism of Ratcliffe's approach, describing it as "terrifying" and the takeover as a "PR disaster."
"INEOS' attitude has left a lot to be desired," Brown said. "It seems their primary focus is on the bottom line rather than the best interests of the club. They have hastily removed loyal staff who embody the Manchester United ethos, replacing them with cheaper alternatives."
Brown continued, "This lack of understanding of the game and its people could have serious consequences. The long-term impacts of these decisions are sure to catch up with them. From a PR perspective, it has been nothing short of a calamity, and I have little faith in their understanding of the football landscape."
The turbulence at Old Trafford has raised concerns among fans about the direction of the club under Ratcliffe's ownership. With the transfer window fast approaching, the pressure is on the new regime to deliver results and restore stability to the club.
