Cristiano Ronaldo's brief but impactful second spell at Manchester United may have ended in acrimony, but his influence on the club continues to be felt. The Portuguese superstar's call for a "rebuild" appears to have resonated with the club's co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
In a candid YouTube chat with Rio Ferdinand earlier this year, Ronaldo urged Manchester United to undertake a complete overhaul, stating: "They need to rebuild everything, in my opinion that's what the club needs. It's still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change. You have to rebuild, from the bottom, it's the only way they can compete."
It seems that Ratcliffe has taken these words to heart. The INEOS billionaire has recently injected £79 million into the club, increasing his stake to 28.94%. While the investment won't be used for immediate transfers, it will strengthen the club's financial position and fund long-term projects, including the development of a new stadium.
Ratcliffe's vision for Manchester United extends far beyond financial stability. The businessman has long harbored ambitions of building a new, state-of-the-art stadium, a project he has dubbed "the Wembley of the North". However, this ambitious plan faces several hurdles, including opposition from fans who cherish the history and tradition of Old Trafford, as well as complex planning regulations.
Despite these challenges, Ratcliffe and his team are determined to press ahead with their plans. A recent restructuring of the club, which saw around 250 jobs cut, has led to significant cost savings and freed up funds for investment.
Ronaldo's departure from Manchester United may have been tumultuous, but his influence on the club's future is undeniable. His outspoken criticism and suggestions for improvement have clearly struck a chord with the club's new owners.
As Manchester United enters a new era, it is clear that the club is undergoing a significant transformation. With Ratcliffe's investment and the club's commitment to long-term sustainability, the future looks bright for the Red Devils.
