The Portuguese manager, who has impressed at Sporting Lisbon, is taking over at Old Trafford following the departure of Erik ten Hag. However, Meulensteen has warned that the club may be repeating a mistake.
Both Ten Hag and Amorim arrived at Old Trafford with impressive credentials, having revitalised clubs in leagues considered less competitive. Ten Hag led Ajax to domestic success and Champions League glory, while Amorim enjoyed a similar journey with Sporting.
"It's more about the appointment process than their management style or coaching ability," explained Meulensteen. He drew direct comparisons between the two appointments, stating: "When United opted for Ten Hag, he was leading Ajax in a smaller league and was performing exceptionally well. Amorim represents that same profile from Portugal."
While Meulensteen acknowledges Amorim's attractive playing style, he questions whether the Portuguese coach can adapt his successful methods to the demanding environment of the Premier League.
"His football philosophy is quite attractive," admitted Meulensteen. "However, Ten Hag lacked Premier League experience, and so does Amorim. While there was excitement around Ten Hag's methodology at Ajax, Manchester United struggled to replicate that attractive style during his tenure."
The primary concern is that Amorim may face difficulties transitioning his tactics and strategies to a league characterised by its high demands and diverse playing styles. "Amorim arrives with a clear philosophy, stating: 'This is how I intend to play.' But he faces a completely different challenge with a different group of players in a new league," he noted. "Therefore, recreating his previous success could prove very challenging."
Fans have been echoing Meulensteen's sentiments, with mixed reactions to the appointment circulating in various online discussions. Some fans are optimistic about Amorim's potential, highlighting his success at Sporting, while others are more cautious, citing the challenges faced by Ten Hag.
