Andre Onana has a big decision to make after the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon.

The omens for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana looked bad even before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) got underway in the Ivory Coast. Onana's last match for United before the continental tournament was meant to be the 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on December 30. However, a reluctant Onana was not keen on leaving Old Trafford until the very last possible moment.

Possible separation, Erik ten Hag a controversial modification is planned

Unsurprisingly, considering his slow start to life in Manchester, Onana was concerned his place in the team could be lost permanently to backup option and fellow summer signing Altay Bayindir. An agreement was reached with the Cameroonian FA for the shot-stopper to join his teammates immediately after the Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, weather issues in the host country grounded Onana's flight and the 27-year-old would miss the draw to Guinea. It would be fair to suggest this mishap set the tone for the United man's tournament as he disappointed in his only appearance against Senegal. He would end up being a substitute for the remainder of AFCON as his country was knocked out at the weekend by Nigeria in the Round of 16. Erik ten Hag confirmed his 'keeper would be back in the squad for Thursday night's trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers but Onana is also returning with a conundrum.

According to the newspapers, Onana is considering retiring from international football again as his relationship with the Cameroonian FA continues to deteriorate. While the issues between Onana and his country are out of the hands of the Reds, United could be on the way towards an unexpected boost. Undoubtedly Onana's struggles with his country will be impacting him and his performances. Concentrating on two tough situations will take its toll on a player's mental health.

Definitive decision

So, should the 'keeper decide to focus just on domestic football, we could see a marked improvement in Onana's displays. Currently, the 27-year-old is playing like someone low on self-belief and confidence. One school of thought is to try and play your way out of a bad patch. But, considering what is happening with Cameroon, the best thing for United and Onana is for him to focus solely on the Old Trafford project before taking on any further commitments.
