Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro have returned to full training with Manchester United after prolonged periods out through injury.

Martinez has been sidelined with a recurrence of a foot injury suffered last season, having not played since United’s 4-3 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich in September. Casemiro, meanwhile, has not featured since limping off during United’s Carabao Cup fourth round defeat to Newcastle United in November.

United confirmed that both players resumed training with the rest of Erik ten Hag’s squad on Wednesday, having previously been working on an individual basis with the club’s medical staff. Both players are expected to return to action this month, with Ten Hag also hoping to have Harry Maguire, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia available later this month.

Maguire has been missing with a groin injury since United’s Champions League exit last month, while Mount and Malacia have been out with calf and knee issues respectively. Victor Lindelof is recovering from groin surgery, while Anthony Martial has missed United’s last five games through illness.

United will be without Sofyan Amrabat after his Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) call-up by Morocco, although have been boosted by an agreement with the Cameroon Football Federation to delay Andre Onana’s release for the tournament. Onana will be available for United’s Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur on 14 January, then immediately fly out to Ivory Coast to join up with his national team squad.

Cameroon will play Guinea in their opening AFCON match on January 15 and the 27-year-old will be able to represent his country, if selected. Onana ended his international career in 2022 because of a disagreement with FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o at that year’s World Cup in Qatar.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper came out of international retirement in September to help Cameroon qualify for AFCON. Onana was set to miss up to six United games but talks between the club and FECAFOOT have struck a compromise that maximises his playing time for both teams. Onana will also be available for United’s FA Cup third round tie against Wigan Athletic on Monday evening.
