Whilst Erik ten Hag’s side struggled for periods of the game, they did come very close to taking all three points late on through Scott McTominay. However, as if often the case with United this season, individual moments seem to be papering over the cracks of the bigger picture.

Rio Ferdinand worries about the situation of Garnacho and Hojlund at Man United

And whilst Sutton yesterday called for ten Hag to be sacked, he’s now taken a look at some other problem areas he sees as the club. Speaking on ‘The Monday Night Club’, Sutton was convinced that Man United’s starting centre-backs on Sunday would never get into Tottenham’s team. In fairness to ten Hag, he has been missing players through injury, but it’s clear that 36-year-old Jonny Evans should not be playing such a significant role.

Whilst he is performing admirably, the centre-back simply isn’t part of a longer-term vision, one United really do need to put in place. Speaking on the podcast, Sutton wasn’t impressed Evans or Raphael Varane in United’s back line. He said: “If you look at the Manchester United centre-halves yesterday, Varane and Evans, they wouldn’t play in an Ange Postecoglou team. They can’t run.”

Chris Sutton says Man United pair Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans would never play for Tottenham. Of course, it was clear on Sunday the difference a centre-back pairing can make to how a team plays. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero’s performance wasn’t without fault, but the duo displayed a lot of progressive passing and recovery pace.

The only pair of players

Perhaps only Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof could boast the same ability at United, with the former’s return now very welcome. Ten Hag’s side don’t adequate strength in depth, they don’t have a clear message through their squad, and it’s as a result of poor planning. Sutton is right to point out that the Man United pair wouldn’t play for Tottenham, a club building a clear identity.
