Whilst at United, Jose had his players that he absolutely adored, and then there were some players that Jose felt like did not belong in his squad. When looking at United’s current squad there are still a few players that are still here from the Jose era. Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, and of course Scott Mctominay.

Jose gave the Scottish midfielder his debut and from the beginning Jose had a lot of love for the Scotsman. Mourinho gave Mctominay his debut against Arsenal in 2017 and immediately used Mctominay’s work ethic as a measuring stick for the rest of the squad. Jose appreciates players that will leave their blood sweat and tears on the pitch, and that is what Scott did for not just United, but for Jose as well.

Mctominays work rate has not only been appreciated by Jose, as the Scottish midfielder has always been a coaches player, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer really appreciated him, and Ralf Rangnick used him a lot in his brief stint. You can see with Erik Ten Hag, that the Dutchman appreciates his physical profile and has used him as a six eight and ten in the past two years.

What was Jose’s nickname for Scott Mctominay

Jose gave Scott a nickname very similar to his own as the “The Special One” called ScottThe Special Boy”. In a podcast with Jake Humphrey, Mctominay gave his thoughts on the nickname. Scott said "It's a little bit extra isn't it. Whenever I heard it, I thought he's just trying to send a message to the rest of them, maybe get their act together and start performing properly. You can never get too carried away because you'll get humbled quick."
