Consistency is a very important attribute in football, and it can be what separates the great from the good. When looking at the great United teams under Sir Alex Ferguson, the level of consistency shown by the players was evident. Ryan Giggs had 20 years of consistency whilst changing roles on the pitch, Gary Neville was as consistent as they come at the right back at his peak, Wayne Rooney, and many more. But in the past decade where United have been quite lackluster, one of the biggest reasons is the lack of consistency.

Manchester United have had some great talents in the past decade, yet the number of players that were truly consistent can be counted on the one hand. Multiple players had incredible performances over the course of a season, but when the time came to replicate the excellent season the year after, they typically faltered.
In the 2019/2020 season, Manchester United were struggling as the January transfer window approached. The squad was injury riddled and needed a boost. Enter Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder lifted the morale of the club and with the return of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford from injury, Manchester United were able to go on a run. Bruno in his first two years was quite consistent and lifted United which had him enter discussions against the player that is the model of consistency in the league. Kevin De Bruyne.
The two have been considered the best in their position in the league and the fact that they play for rival clubs helped ignite the debate and whilst Bruno has been able to talk to De Bruyne when it comes to stats, he falls short in consistency, especially on the big stages. When the crunch time comes in the league, KDB is always there, and Bruno isn’t.

“Pogba was a great talent, but I didn’t think he was a great player and the same with Bruno Fernandes. No doubt the talent is there but there’s just something [missing] and the great players, it’s in their head of where they need to be whether it’s defensively or to receive the ball – like [Kevin] De Bruyne,” said Carragher.
