Pressure can make you or break you. That sentence applies to footballers and especially to ones that have huge transfer fees and have a greater set of expectations. When you look at the most expensive footballers of all time, how many of them truly lived up to the hype. Yet no one knows more about transfer flops than Manchester United.

United’s spending in the past decade has been ridiculed by just about everyone. It’s been made fun of by club legends, rivals, fans, and the media. Yet Manchester United never learned from their mistakes and continuously threw money hoping it will stick. Some of the expensive names include the likes of Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, Romelu Lukaku, and a few more. Yet there is one signing that has been ridiculed the most and that signing is Antony.

The signing of Antony has been scoffed at from day one as the price was regarded as a major overpay. The Athletic reported this past month that United scouts valued Antony at 25 million British pounds. United wound up paying 86 million British pounds. That’s over triple the price. The production of Antony has proven the United scouts right and has people asking questions of the decision makers of the football club.

Antony has yet to crack 10 goals at the club in his 18 months at the club. The Brazilian has seen his right wing spot taken from a fellow South American Alejandro Garnacho who has showcased that he can provide the output that Antony lacks. While no one can question Antony’s work rate and desire, at the end of the day the output is not there.

The stat that Ian Wright made fun of on Twitter

Antony’s statistical misfortunes have been well documented, and the laughing has made its way to social media as things got worse for the Brazilian. Antony failed to register a goal contribution in the 23/24 season, meanwhile Timo Werner in his first game in the Premier League this season was able to register an assist. When asked about the stat, Ian Wright had this to say “Well, they are going to say that and he has, It’s a fact.”
