Manchester United love signing a veteran striker. In the past decade there have been several strikers on the other side of 30 that the club approach to sign. Some have been hits and some have been flops as is the case at Manchester United. In the Fergie days there were more successes, such as Louis Saha and Teddy Sheringham, and of course Robin Van Persie. Since RVP, United have tried replicating the formula but to no avail.

Some of the veteran strikers United have signed is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Radamel Falcao, Odion Ighalo, Edinson Cavani, and Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was a different case to the rest as United signed him to avoid him going to Manchester City. The other were the free signings that Manchester United always went to penny pinch.

The likes of Zlatan and Cavani had a successful season at Manchester United, but they were always short-term fixes, for a club that needed long term fixes. United find themselves in a different position as compared to the past. They have found their striker for the future in Rasmus Hojlund, but now they need to find a veteran presence to help mentor the young striker. In other years, it was the short term will come in to start until we find the long term, but the flip has switched.

United have been linked with a couple of veteran strikers this winter with Eric Maxim Choupo Moting and Karim Benzema. The Bayern striker has been linked with United in the past and he’s looking for more gametime. Benzema on the other hand is more of an opportunity for United to sign a former Ballon D’or winner, although he is in the end stages of his career.
