Manchester United’s defensive struggles have been evident this year, especially in Europe where the club failed to keep the ball out of the net in five of the six group games. While in the Premier League the defense is better, it is still not up to the standard it was last season for example. Injuries have played a part in it but also lack of quality is also a reason. Therefore, United are looking to once again improve their strength in numbers in defense.

A few of the players here currently are not expected to be here next year. Raphael Varane’s contract is expiring, and it is uncertain if he will sign a new deal. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are under contract for next season, but having already been linked with moves the previous summer, there is likely to be interest once again. Therefore, Lisandro Martinez is the only cb that has a guaranteed spot in the squad next year.

With the January transfer window winding down and clubs starting to prepare their summer transfer lists, United have been linked with a few names at the cb position. This week we have seen the club linked with Ronald Araujo, Leny Yoro, and Jarrad Branthwaite. All three defenders are high on the list of potential targets. There is also another name, although this one may be more of a managerial target. Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutch international has a big past with Ten Hag as he was the captain for Ajax under Ten Hag in the 18/19 season. De Ligt was close to joining United on two occasions in 19/20 and 22/23 but the defender chose to go Juventus and Bayern Munich in those respective seasons. With Erik Ten Hag at the club now, United might have a stronger chance of recruiting him.

Thomas Tuchel shuts down De Ligt rumors

Whilst there are reports from Germany that the Dutchman is looking for a way out, his coach Thomas Tuchel completely disagrees. In his presser, Thomas Tuchel said “But of course we’re planning with Matthijs, he is our player, a top player and a top character.”
