Manchester United are in the market for a forward this winter and there have been multiple names mentioned with the club but no signings so far. Earlier in the season Stuttgart striker Seydou Guirassy was linked with the club, Eric Choupo-Moting of Bayern was linked, and the club tried to secure the services of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna. But with no money made so far in the window, United have not been able to address their forward issue.

One of the most reliably linked names with the club was former Chelsea player Timo Werner. The German forward was at RB Leizpig in the beginning of the season before moving to Tottenham Hotspur on loan this winter for the rest of the season. Werner struggled with injuries at Leipzig, and with a Euros tournament on the horizon this summer, Timo wanted to find a temporary home where he can get playing time.

Before Spurs ended up signing Timo, Fabrizio Romano had confirmed that Werner was one of the more serious options United were considering for the January transfer window. It appears that United are in the market for a temporary option that is cheap unless they can get one of their summer targets for a good price now like they tried with Zirkzee. That has not happened yet so United seriously contemplated the short-term fix.

United ended up never seriously pursuing the deal and that is when Spurs were able to capitalize and bring him in. Ironically enough, Timo Werner would end up making his debut against United this past Sunday and contributed with an assist for the second goal to Rodrigo Bentancur. He also had a couple great opportunities to score but his finishing let him down severely.

Peter Schmeichel’s criticism of Timo Werner

“I don’t think Werner is the kind of player Manchester United need, at this moment in time,” said Schmeichel. “We are watching all the good stuff when he is putting the ball into the back of the net. But we have also seen him, when he was at Chelsea, making bad decisions. Not scoring in positions where you are supposed to score as a striker.”
