In football, "what if?" scenarios are commonplace, but few are as intriguing as Rio Ferdinand's revelation that he could have joined Barcelona just before Pep Guardiola's revolution. The Manchester United legend has confessed he turned down the Catalan giants, believing they were a "team in transition."
Ferdinand revealed that Frank Rijkaard, then Barcelona manager, made contact in the aftermath of the 2007/08 Champions League semi-final between the two sides. United prevailed, en route to lifting the trophy, but the interest from Barcelona was genuine. "I was close," Ferdinand admitted to BT Sport. "They were talking with my agent, and I spoke to Rijkaard, not directly about going, but he conveyed his idea."
For Ferdinand, the timing was crucial. United's victory over Barcelona and subsequent Champions League triumph solidified his commitment to the club. "We knocked them out, and we went on to win the Champions League. Why would I leave the European champions to go to another club in transition?" he questioned.
Ferdinand's assessment of Barcelona as a "team in transition" was accurate. At that time, Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi were not the established superstars they would later become. "At that moment, Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi weren't the players they became three or four years later," Ferdinand explained.
With Ferdinand staying put, Barcelona turned to another Manchester United defender, Gerard Piqué. The young Spaniard, a former Barcelona academy player, returned to the Camp Nou for a mere €5 million.
Ferdinand's "transition" period proved short-lived. Just a year later, Barcelona, now under Guardiola, defeated United in the Champions League final, completing an unprecedented sextuple.
Despite the allure of Barcelona, Ferdinand's decision to stay at United further cemented his legendary status at Old Trafford. He formed a formidable partnership with Nemanja Vidić, winning numerous titles and establishing himself as one of the finest defenders of his generation.
Rio Ferdinand's near-move to Barcelona is a fascinating "what if?" story. His decision to stay at Manchester United proved to be a masterstroke, while Barcelona's subsequent success under Guardiola highlighted the unpredictable nature of football.
