Manchester United have reportedly decided who will inherit Marcus Rashford’s iconic Number 10 shirt. The academy graduate found himself sidelined at Carrington mid-season, having been frozen out by manager Rúben Amorim for over 45 days.
Following months of speculation linking him with some of Europe’s biggest clubs, the 27-year-old eventually secured a loan move to Aston Villa, who hold an option to sign him permanently for £40 million at the end of the season.
Rashford’s promising start at Villa Park has done little to change Amorim’s stance, with the manager determined to part ways with the player permanently. While it remains uncertain whether Villa will exercise their option to buy, it seems increasingly unlikely that the England international will return to Old Trafford.
This raises the question: who will take over United’s prestigious Number 10 shirt, previously worn by club legends such as Wayne Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Zlatan Ibrahimović? According to the Manchester Evening News, the club may consider handing the shirt to a new signing. However, based on merit, there appears to be only one real contender—Amad Diallo.
The Ivorian initially struggled to make an impact at United, impressing only during loan spells at Rangers and Sunderland. Under Erik ten Hag, he was often overlooked in favour of Antony. However, since Amorim’s arrival in November, the situation has changed dramatically, with Diallo becoming a key figure in the new manager’s plans.
Before sustaining an injury in February, the young winger had contributed nine goals and seven assists, including a dramatic late comeback against Manchester City and an equaliser at Anfield against Liverpool. His performances have won over a large section of the fanbase, many of whom are eager to see him swap his current Number 16 shirt for the revered Number 10.
While the club's final decision remains to be seen, it is clear that Diallo has established himself as a leading candidate for the honour.
The Number 10 shirt at Manchester United carries a significant weight of expectation. It's a number associated with creativity, flair, and match-winning ability. Previous wearers have been iconic figures who have left an indelible mark on the club's history. Handing it out is a statement of intent, a sign of confidence in a player's potential to become a key figure.
Amad Diallo's emergence as a genuine contender for the Number 10 shirt is a testament to his progress under Rúben Amorim. After a somewhat fragmented start to his United career, where he found it difficult to secure regular playing time, Diallo has blossomed into a crucial member of the squad.
Amorim's arrival seems to have unlocked Diallo's full potential. The manager's tactical approach, which emphasizes attacking football and creative freedom, has allowed the Ivorian winger to flourish. Diallo's contributions in terms of goals and assists have been vital, and his performances in high-pressure matches have demonstrated his ability to perform on the big stage.
Several factors make Diallo a strong candidate for the Number 10 shirt:
While Diallo appears to be the leading candidate, Manchester United may consider other options. The club could choose to give the shirt to a new signing, a proven star with a track record of success. However, that would mean overlooking a player who has earned the right to be considered through his performances on the pitch.
Ultimately, the decision of who will wear the Number 10 shirt next season is a significant one. It's a decision that will send a message to the squad and the fans about the club's vision for the future.
