Manchester United made it difficult for themselves once again but Erik ten Hag's side earned a vital 4-3 win over Wolves on Thursday to move up to seventh in the Premier League. Having come into the game without a win in the league since Boxing Day, all eyes were on United and Marcus Rashford. The forward returned to Ten Hag's squad after missing the Newport County win following an "internal matter".

Martinez and Mount latest news after the fear of Manchester United fans

Rashford took five minutes to make an immediate impact with a well-placed effort past Jose Sa. Rasmus Hojlund made it three goals in three games to make it 2-0 in the first-half. A controversial penalty to Wolves gave the hosts a lifeline before Scott McTominay added a third in the 75th minute. However, the Reds threw away their lead in the space of 10 minutes as Pedro Neto's 95th minute equaliser looked as though it would deny United all three points.

Step up, Kobbie Mainoo. After scoring his first goal for the club at the weekend, the midfielder showed unreal skill and technique to curl the ball into the bottom corner two minutes later.

Sam Wallace, of The Telegraph, wrote: "This was the kind of thrilling late, great win that was once the hallmark of Manchester United, although this Erik ten Hag team were only obliged to do it this way because they had conspired to squander the advantage so many times. "It was a five-man United defence to see out nine minutes of time added on and they still managed to be outnumbered in the counterattack for Neto’s goal. Yet just as Wolves thought they had secured the draw, Mainoo took a pass from Forson and scored the goal of his life. "From nowhere in particular on the left he went around the substitute Joao Gomes, slipped the ball through the legs of Max Kilman and dispatched the winner past Jose Sa."

More opinions

Chris Wheeler, of the Daily Mail, wrote: "This was a massive win for them and not just because the gap to the top-four is only eight points now. "They seem to be gathering momentum at a time when Ten Hag desperately needs it. If this wasn’t his strongest team, then it was pretty close to it now Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Luke Shaw are back in action. "The old frailties still linger, though, and United cannot keep on giving up leads like this if they are going to salvage anything from this strangest of seasons."
