There was a wide grin across Andre Onana's face as Cameroon celebrated reaching the knockout rounds of the Africa Cup of Nations. Although Onana was dropped to the bench for Tuesday's game against Gambia, the Manchester United goalkeeper was still part of the celebrations in the dressing room and the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o, was just a few yards away from where he sat below his locker.

Onana returned to the starting line-up for Cameroon's defeat to Senegal and although he conceded three goals, it was a shock to see him dropped again against Gambia. Tuesday night's game was the group decider and Cameroon required a win to progress, but goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa was preferred to start and he plays in the French third division. Onana had a smile on his face in the footage released from the dressing room, however, his omission from the team is the latest bizarre chapter in an eventful international career.

Differences between Onana and the Cameroonian environment

While the dust is yet to settle on Cameroon's victory, there have already been suggestions it's Eto'o who picks the team, not Song, which could explain why Onana was dropped if there is indeed a rift between the pair. It's claimed Onana remains at odds with Eto'o and it will be fascinating to see whether he starts against Nigeria in the Round of 16. The second-choice 'keeper, Ondoa, has made just a handful of appearances for Nimes, who could be relegated to the French fourth tier. Ondoa being preferred to Onana is surely not a decision based on sporting merit and something is not right within the Cameroon squad again.
