Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been told he does not have enough desire or passion to tackle the Championship in a damning assessment of his next options.

Jones, 31, hasn't played a minute since Erik ten Hag was named manager and is in the final three months of his contract. As such, Jones is expected to move on when the market reopens after more than 12 years with the Old Trafford giants.

In that time, the former Blackburn Rovers player has made 229 appearances and four major trophy wins. However, there is no certainty where his future lies.

During a Bettors promo, former United and England player Paul Parker said, his contract expires this summer and he needs to consider whether he wants to retire or continue playing. He has been enjoying himself for many years with a club he loves with a huge salary as a bonus, but now he has to move on.

What was Ten Hag's commentary?

If any club is going to sign him, they have to work very, very hard with him. His muscles are not that strong anymore and he requires a lot to play in the Championship. That is a very tough league and I don't do it. I think he has the level to be perfectly honest.
