Before the opening of the January transfer window, there was certainty across Manchester United that the club was going to make some addition to the team after Erik Ten Hag declared their ambition for the second half of the season shortly after the club action resumed in late December.
It was obvious that the Red Devils were going to sign a new striker to add more firepower to their attacking options for the second half of the season after Ronaldo's exit. The club was linked with several top stars including Cody Gakpo, Goncalo Ramos, and Victor Osimhen.

The club was deeply invested in bringing in Gakpo with talks set to be at the final stage before United's rival Liverpool hijacked the transfer out of nowhere to announce the signing. The club moved on to other backup options and quickly escalated talks to avoid another hijack.
Wout Weghorst was eventually signed from Burnley till the end of the season to boost their attack which already has Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony. Jack Butland was also brought in to provide more cover for the goalkeeping unit and Ten Hag signaled the end of their business in the market.
According to reports, Manchester United is still open to signing new players this winter despite Ten Hag's past remarks about new additions. It is rumored that the club will still bring in an extra attacker if they find a quality player available in the market as well as a right-back if Wan-Bissaka leaves in this window.
