Shortly after Jose Mourinho was signed as the new Manchester United manager he realized he wasn't getting the results he wanted in some aspects of his team, especially in the left-back position as Luke Shaw was underperforming badly.
It was so bad that Mourinho publicly criticized the England fullback over his performance at the club. He revealed back then that Luke Shaw wasn't strong enough to earn a spot in his team after he disregards knowing the player during a presser in 2017.

Mourinho's interest was in signing a top fullback and had strong links to former player EPL and then Chelsea fullback Marcos Alonso who was part of the Chelsea Premier League winning team of the 2016-17 season. Alonso joined Chelsea in the summer of 2016 from Fiorentina.
Mourinho was a huge fan of the Spanish fullback whom he had been following during Chelsea's performance after he left the club in his second spell. Ultimately he failed to get Alonso as United focused on other targets which disappointed Jose Mourinho.
Earlier today, news broke of the passing of Marcos Alonso's dad, who named Marcos Alonso Pena. The son sought to follow in his father's footsteps and joined Barcelona in the summer after several years in England with Chelsea. He won several titles with Chelsea including the EPL, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Champions League.
