Jaap Stam is one of the strongest and most consistent defenders in recent years in the Netherlands. The central defender always prevailed against any rival with his 1.91 height, he had a straight profile and never gave up the ball. His versatility also allowed him to act as a winger on the right, although his main function was always as a centre-back.
Speaking to Rangers TV, he said it's always good to play these legend games of course. Going to Glasgow is a bit special for him, as he hasn't been there much, but he is looking forward to the crowds and being in the city. Stam also reflected on his last visit to Ibrox, which was as Feyenoord manager in 2019.
The Light Blues won 1-0 on that occasion in the Europa League clash and it was a moving game as it came just after the passing of Rangers and Dutch hero Fernando Ricksen as that game was special not only because played against Rangers, but also by Fernando.
His facet as a footballer was full of success, but injuries also accompanied him for years and affected the decision to retire in 2007. Jaap Stam's list of winners was made up as follows: one Eredivisie, one Dutch Cup and two Super Cups in the Netherlands with PSV; three Premier League and one FA Cup with Manchester United; an Italian Cup with Lazio; an Italian Super Cup with AC Milan and finally a Dutch Cup and two Dutch Super Cups with Ajax.
After retiring, Jaap Stam prepared to be able to work as a technical director and currently has the UEFA PRO License. He has already served as manager of Ajax B, Reading of England, Zwolle and Feyenoord of the Netherlands. Today and since 2020 he is the technical director of FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer.
