England’s golden generation of the mid 90's and the early 200's have had a mix bag of results when it comes to the managerial careers of some of its brightest and most influential components. As influential as they were on the pitch, they have endured a really tough time off of it, particularly when it comes to the sideline.

Legends of the English game such as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard both started off the season as Premier League managers, but now find themselves without a club. Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Sol Campbell all had a crack at the dugout and failed. As for John Terry, he is yet to be more than an assistant. And Wayne Rooney has had to go try his luck in the MLS.

But there is still one tiny glimmer of hope among that illustrious generation of talented footballers. That being Michael Carrick who has taken up the hot seat at relegation threatened Middlesbrough and in just over 4 months in charge has taken the team from staring down at League One to dreaming of playing in the Premier League come August.

He’s been able to coach Boro' from one of the most boring and dull outfits in England to one of the most versatile, energetic and entertaining teams to watch in that part of the world, scoring goals for fun and looking like a real contender to escape the depths of the second tier to being among the big boys in the country once again.

How has Carrick done it?

During his illustrious career, the former Manchester United midfield general had the honor of working under and along side some of the best managers of the last decades. Of course, it all started under arguably the best manager of all time Sir Alex Ferguson, but he also has had the pleasure of being managed by the likes of Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. Enabling him to fabricate his own unique style of management which seems to be working wounders at this moment in time.
