Manchester United fans were left furious at the weekend following their team's humiliating 3-1 loss at Aston Villa in a must-win encounter. The result meant an early end to an exciting run of nine games unbeaten against the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, and Arsenal.

But no one was more hurt by the result than the save hands in goal for United, whose backline was run ragged, bringing an end to their three-game clean sheet run. David De Gea was a frustrated figure after the game in which Cristiano Ronaldo captained for the first time since January.

It was the worst moment of his career, he found his level and will play the World Cup

The loss at Villa also had a detrimental effect on De Gea's contract situation with the Old Trafford club as he had hoped to continue to apply pressure with his performance towards getting a contract renewal as he countdown to the final months of his current deal. An opportunity that seems to be all lost now.

The Spaniard has been Erik Ten Hag's first choice in goal for the majority of the season especially after his once-able deputy Dean Henderson was loaned out for more game time at Nottingham Forest. So far De Gea has kept five clean sheets from 13 Premier League games with the help of his defenders.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW FOR THE GOALIE?

Well, it seems his current plans have been foiled at the moment, and can only try to find another way to pursue his contract renewal goal. The 32-year-old has been at United since 2011 and has garnered 390 appearances with 135 clean sheets so far for the Red Devils.
