Manchester United wanted to sign one of the most sought after strikers of that summer transfer window, it was 2016 when Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho became the new manager of the Red Devils. Mourinho's arrival carried a lot of weight after his time at Chelsea for the second time in his career.
They thought that with this manager, success would return to the institution that had not long after winning the Premier League. There was no talk of a title crisis, rather the issue was what they could achieve with a team that had the most expensive signing in the club's history, the French midfielder, Paul Pogba.
These signings are those who will rescue Erik ten Hag's legacy in bench
Fans demand this player to start, he was needed to start the derby
That season he wanted to reunite with the striker he managed during his time at Real Madrid, a striker he had to sell because of the competition he had with Karim Benzema, both strikers wanted prominence and Mourinho could not keep them both. He made a complicated decision and let go the Argentine who wanted to have a leading role.
Jose Mourinho tried to sign him but Napoli's asking price was too high, the offer did not arrive from the Red Devils, they could not compete for his signing due to his cost, in the end he went to Juventus in exchange for €90 million which made him the most expensive signing in the history of Argentine players.
Having made the most expensive signing in Man Utd's history, there was no choice but to look for another option, which came in the form of Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from PSG, who was signed via free agency. Another great player they could get without spending, they could not bid for the player the Portuguese trainer was looking.
