While Manchester United sought after other players they missed out on this top-quality signing.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign is being tipped by many as the best World Cup event held in history because of several reasons including the quality of performances and the birth of new world stars in football. Argentina won the tournament with penalties.

Manchester United did a lot of scouting at the Mundial as they prepared for the winter transfer window, in anticipation of some big top additions to the January market but a shocking change in Manchester United's plans saw them put an end to their ambitious winter plans.

The Red Devils brought in three players on loan in the winter market to bolster their squad. An injury to Christian Eriksen prompted Manchester United to seek a new midfielder, and they successfully brought in Marcel Sabitzer from Bayern Munich as cover.

But the latest reports reveal that Manchester United sought after a World Cup midfield star, Sofayan Amrabat as a replacement for Eriksen. The midfielder who plays for Fiorentina led Morocco to the World Cup semifinal with his stellar midfield performance.

Was Manchester United's interest in Amrabat genuine?

According to football transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, Sofayan Amrabat's brother Nordin Amrabat confirmed Manchester United's interest. He said 'I can name three clubs who were concrete in the last two or three days of the transfer window. Manchester United wanted a loan with an option to buy deal, Fiorentina rejected.'
