The last summer transfer window meant a lot to the club, as it broke the all-time record in spending for the team. Just over £200 million was spent on players to bolster the team, who are in the Europa League this season after last year's poor results.
But just under £150 million was spent on the signings of Brazilians Casemiro and Antony, after starting the season with two defeats. A trend that could be categorised as pressure. Antony is the second signing in the club's history, and came in the wake of a difficult start to the season.
Man Utd are depending on this for reinforcements in the winter transfer window
The complicated infancy of one of the most expensive signings in Man Utd's history
The defeat away to Brentford showed that the team lacked confidence, there were doubts about the technical approach that Erik ten Hag would impose, maybe the pieces were not in place, maybe Cristiano was right to leave the team. This match above all, what it provoked was pressure on a board that invests, but is short on titles won.
According to a report by the CIES Football Observatory, Manchester United overpaid for players who were signed in recent years. It is the club that has spent the most in the world over the price of players, with more than £200 million being overpaid for reinforcements relative to their value, an amount that is driven by the pressure of underachieving. Antony and Casemiro are worth £150 million?
