Man United can still win a domestic cup double after they thrashed Brighton 7-6 on penalties at Wembley.

There were 12,000 more attendees present at this semi-final than on the previous day without competition. The city is yours, packed with Manchester United supporters, 20,000 empty seats, are you sure? Those of a red and blue persuasion will return to Wembley next month.

United's only win on penalties in their previous eight came against Rochdale and the goalkeeper was Robert Sanchez, between the Brighton sticks. David de Gea rested that night. De Gea, United captain with the replacement of Bruno Fernandes, lost the draws for the choice of winger and taker. Brighton had the benefit of a blue and white backdrop and went ahead first.

De Gea did not stop consulting his equipment bag, where the notes were hidden, between kicks. I have awarded six penalties, 17 in a row in penalty kicks. In the end, De Gea was not required. Solly March, the Brighton Academy graduate, dodged the kick. March was crying full time. De Gea measuredly consoled his compatriot Sánchez. De Gea was not a winner in the penalty shootout, but he was reliable in regulation; a timely response to his mishaps on his weekdays.

Wout Weghorst reacted to Victor Lindelof's winner and embarked on his own one-man celebration, running faster than ever to slide to his knees in front of the delirious crowd of United supporters. Weghorst epitomized the team's performance; flawed, committed and nerveless when he mattered most.

Wout's past and present

Weghorst converted in the World Cup quarter-final and his skill with it possibly baffled March as he handed the ball to him and kissed him. The kiss of death in sudden death. Circle the date on your calendar. It is now certain that United's season will end with the first FA Cup final in Manchester on June 3. This was always United's biggest tie of the week and topped a lethargic performance against one of the most impressive teams in the Premier League. United will have another grueling encounter with Brighton at the Amex on Thursday of the week.
