Manchester United had to settle for a makeshift center-back pairing for the last five weeks before the league season was halted for the commencement of the World Cup. This left the fans with lots of worries about how they would fare and hoped for the star player to return.
Erik Ten Hag was forced to accept the reality that he won't have his preferred defenders at the heart of his United backline after Raphael Varane was subbed off for an injury in the Chelsea game. The was seen leaving the pitch inconsolably as he feared the worse for the club and himself.

Fortunately, United was able to get the results in the games that he missed, while he patiently recuperated on the sidelines. His full focus was to be back and fit for the France World Cup campaign in Qatar as they seek to defend their title.
Varane returned in time and style for France at the World Cup as he made his debut for the campaign today in France's win against Denmark. He started the game from the first whistle and smoothly control the game from the backline as his teammates ran Denmark ragged across the pitch.
Although United fans might have been sad not to see him play at Old Trafford until after the World Cup, they had the chance to watch him rise to the occasion and tempo of the Mundial despite not playing any competitive fixture in weeks. He played a 70 minutes part in France's winning on the night as he was subbed off to maintain his fitness for the coming games.
