When Manchester United highlighted the centreback position as a key area for improvement in the summer, not many thought Lisandro Martinez of Ajax is what they need. But the club was persistent in signing him despite Ajax's effort to not do the deal at all.

He joined the club swiftly and was instantly exposed to the Premier League on his debut game which saw him get a lot of criticism, both in the stands and on social media. His shaky first game in the Red Devils shirt left a doubtful opinion of him in the hearts of fans.

But in the next game, Lisandro turned it around and has seen then won over the United fans one game at a time with his ruthless defensive attitude, while feeding off on the experience of his teammate Raphael Varane, as they built United's formidable backline game after game.

His fine form and consistent performance helped him achieve one of his childhood dreams, as he earned a world cup call to the Argentine national team. Lisandro has been unyielded in his defensive focus so far this season with 56 duels won in the Premier League.

ARE THERE STILL THOSE WHO DOUBT HIS ABILITY?

Lisandro promised from his first day at the club that he will always play for the badge and fire for the team until the final whistle. Though he has gradually begun to win over the club fans with his relentless defending no matter the opposition, some still question his ability at the national team level. Lisandro is reported looking forward to proving them wrong again in Qatar.
