We have not even put our hands in, United overshadowed by the stage of the European night

Sevilla's notable romance with the Europa League cannot legislate for United's gutless capitulation.

Sevilla's notable romance with the Europa League cannot legislate for United's gutless capitulation.

They started with at least five players who should be thrown overboard in the summer and if there is one lesson to be learned from this surrender it is that there must be more exits than entrances. Without Harry Maguire, United led 2-0 in this tie. With him, they lost 5-0. Maguire contributed an own goal and an assist to Sevilla. Maguire and Victor Lindelof hit each other's chests before kickoff. Ten Hag may want to hit the heads of Maguire and David de Gea together.

De Gea's head must be clear of the generational nadir at Brentford, as Youssef En-Nesyri's opening goal was reminiscent of Mathias Jensen stealing the ball from Christian Eriksen inside his own box. Although De Gea was oblivious to the attacking white shirts, Maguire did not care about his surroundings nor did he feel Erik Lamela breathing on his neck. He knew what he wanted to do with the ball before it arrived, but so did Lamela. A top player is also aware of the danger.

Maguire's supporters will use De Gea as a scapegoat, but Maguire demanded the ball when he was surrounded by a triangle of Sevilla shirts. They had all corners covered. During a 28th-minute save, Ten Hag pulled away from Maguire as he approached the touchline to rehydrate.

In first-half added time, another missed pass from Maguire in Sevilla's third dropped United from attacking to defence, with Sevilla denied on the counter by a sliding intervention by Diogo Dalot. Maguire was a lucky omen before this; United had won the last 11 games in which he had started. Maguire was the first redshirt in the tunnel at half time.

Maguire is easy bait for his prey

Maguire is an easy scapegoat, but the blame is widespread. The inevitable renewal of De Gea's contract is a convenience that undermines Ten Hag's ruthlessness. Announced as multifunctional by his coach at the pre-match press conference, De Gea ran out of his box to control a hoik, poorly controlled and En-Nesyri stylishly cut the loose ball into the empty net.
