There were several big summer signings, with some bigger than others, which all depend on the transfer powers of the club and the project they are selling to their transfer targets. Many top clubs around Europe got their key targets while a few battled with trying to keep some of their key players in the squad as they prepared for this season including Manchester United.
United was linked with a host of players expected to come in any improve the team for Ten Hag's first season in charge. A few important faces were brought in to complement the entire squad but there was big news after their transfer strategy than anything else. The desire for Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the team after they failed to qualify for the UEFA champions league.
New manager but same bench situation for special talent
De Gea shower teammate with praises for turning things around
Erik Ten Hag was bombarded with this question week in and week out, and he maintained the same message in his reply that the Portuguese captain is a very key part of his plans. So far that has not been the case as Ronaldo has been subjected to a sparing role in the team with only three starts in the Premier League, much to his displeasure at the lack of consistent games.
A move to London was on the cards in the summer for the 37 years old but subsequently, the move did not realize as United insisted on not selling the all-time European goalscorer no matter the price. Back to back start after his recent return to the first team might have earned Ten Hag a few points with the Legend but another lack of game time will be a huge blow to their renewed relationship.
The only thing Ronaldo loves more than goals is the opportunity to perform at the highest level at all times with a good team. The recent lack of game time for Ronaldo resulted in an outfield outburst with Ten Hag, a situation the manager wouldn't want repeating itself to avoid losing the star player in January to rumored Chelsea.
