Manchester United's victory over Real Sociedad in the Europa League was overshadowed by a controversy sparked by comments from co-owner Jim Ratcliffe. His criticism of the players, labeling them "overpaid," provoked a strong response from team captain Bruno Fernandes.
Manchester United secured a 4-1 win against Real Sociedad, qualifying for the next round of the Europa League. Despite the victory, the atmosphere at the club became tense due to Jim Ratcliffe's statements. Ratcliffe criticized the performance and salaries of some players, generating unease in the dressing room.
Ratcliffe asserted that some players "are not good enough" and others are "probably overpaid." Despite the general criticism, he praised Bruno Fernandes, calling him "a fabulous footballer." "But for us to have a team that we are fully responsible for and accountable to, it will take time. We have this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future," the magnate commented.
Fernandes responded firmly to the criticisms, stating that "it is not nice to hear certain things." He defended his teammates, reminding that "everyone has their own contract." "It's about showing that you can be important to the club. We have to prove our worth every day in training, every day we play a game. We cannot relax at this club. You know there is a great standard, a great attention you receive from the media, from everywhere. You have to realise that sometimes you have to focus on your game and try to improve," Bruno Fernandes analysed.
Ratcliffe's criticisms add to previous incidents where he described Manchester United as "mediocre." He also implied that the players are partially responsible for the redundancies and cuts at the club. The club faces economic problems, with a significant debt that must be settled in 2026.
Manchester United finds itself in a low position in the Premier League. The Europa League has become a key competition for the club. In the quarter-finals, Manchester United will face Lyon from France.
