Once upon a time, underperforming at Manchester United was a sin. If you underperformed, you were gone within a heartbeat. No one was more ruthless than Sir Alex Ferguson, who had the highest of standards, and the moment he felt the player was slacking or heading on the decline they were gone. Which is what made the likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs that more impressive as they were able to play for 15 plus years for Sir Alex.

However, since Sir Alex left the club, that level of standard has dropped massively. The manager that was closest to upholding the club to that standard was Louis van Gaal, but he would only be at the club for two years. Other managers tried to be ruthless as well, but they just did not have the facilities for that. And a big reason for that is because of the people upstairs.

There is no question who is at fault for what has been one of the biggest declines in professional sports. Less than 20 years ago, Manchester United was considered the best in England, and even possibly in Europe. Now they watch their two biggest rivals be the best in class instead and be everything they used to be under Fergie. The Glazers have not been able to replicate five percent of the Scotsman’s success and have prioritized commercial over sport.

And that priority has gotten involved within the transfer strategy. If a player is popular and has huge shirt sales, the club would try and keep him because of that reason. A big example is Paul Pogba, who wanted to leave the club, but the club were hesitant every summer to sell him because of his popularity amongst the fan base.

Omar Berrada’s new statement rule

Omar Berrada does not believe that a player should overstay their welcome, and he is quite ruthless when it comes to parting ways. According to Fabrizio Romano in an interview with United Stand, he stated that Berrada philosophy is players must perform within one or two years or they must leave which would spell bad news for a few current players.
