Weghorst made a surprise loan move from Burnley in January to increase the club's attacking options following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and with Anthony Martial struggling with injury.

Attacking reinforcements are likely to be sought again in the summer, but Ten Hag has spoken about the contribution of his fellow Dutchman, who has scored twice and registered two assists in 18 appearances for Manchester United.

Weghorst's current Burnley deal runs until 2025, but when asked about the prospect of a longer stay at Old Trafford, Ten Hag said he could of course stay and I think he is doing a lot of elements of football very well.

He is doing a very good job for us pressing. He is the process leader in pressing, he initiates the pressing, he is very good at pressing backwards. He is occupying other positions, his link game is doing very well.

United have lost just two games in all competitions this calendar year and Ten Hag added that he has played almost every game since he arrived so he really is part of that success. Ten Hag's side have already won the Carabao Cup this season by beating Sunday's opponent Newcastle United, and while the FA Cup and Europa League provide more title-winning opportunities, the focus for now returns to the Premier League.

Manchester United planes in the summer

The Manchester United boss believes the club will remain an attractive prospect for possible summer reinforcements, whatever front they compete on, but he stressed the importance of Champions League qualification ahead of the trip to Tyneside, his top four rivals.
