After watching him in pre-season, the new manager wasn't impressed

One of Manchester United’s most surprising decisions this summer transfer window was the fact that they transfer listed James Garner in the final weeks of the window. Eventually, the former academy player was sold to Everton on a permanent basis on the transfer deadline day for a fee of €9 million fixed plus £6.5m in add-ons.

The vast majority of fans didn’t approve of this decision by the club because Garner was one of the most talented young players that had come out of the academy and they felt he could have had a chance of playing with the senior team, especially after his great season on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, where he played every week.

The 21-year-old midfielder was a crucial part of the Tricky Trees securing their promotion to the Premier League after 23 long years. He played 49 games last campaign and, despite being a defensive-oriented midfielder, he scored 4 goals and also manage to make 10 assists. He also showed a great ability to control the tempo of the game.

Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic has just reported that Erik ten Hag was a key voice in James Garner’s permanent exit from the club. After watching him throughout the pre-season tour, the new manager believed that the young player wasn’t at the level to play every week for a big club like Manchester United.

A controversial decision

There are a lot of fans who are still angry about the fact that James Garner was sold to another Premier League club like Everton. However, the former Ajax manager knows better and he is only trying to do what’s best for Manchester United in order to get the club back on top where it belongs.
