Last night Manchester United had a magical match in the home victory against Liverpool. The Red Devils beat their biggest rivals to win their first match of the season and hopefully this could be the stepping stone the team desperately needed to turn the negative situation they were in. After yesterday’s performance, Erik ten Hag had a post-match interview with Sky Sports where he praised a couple of players.
First, he was asked about Lisandro Martínez, who had a terrific game and probably was the Man Of The Match last night after being criticized by the press for his height: “For a defender, his technical skills are quite good and his fighting spirit is there, and also his positioning and his battling, also aerially. He is not the tallest but he has good timing”.

Then he moved on to his centre-back partner last night. Just like he said before the match, he chose Varane because of his experience: “Raphael Varane has trophies, with Casemiro and with Ronaldo, you need some guidance for young players who haven’t achieved this until now as that is what we want to achieve with trophies”.
Finally, the interviewer asked about the newest addition to his team, Casemiro. The manager believes he will also help the team with his leadership and mentality: “We were talking about leadership? Today we had leadership on the pitch, but he is one as well. He knows the game, he knows how to win. In his career he’s won so many trophies, and that’s important”.
This could be the beginning of a new iconic centre-back partnership at Old Trafford. Martínez and Varane had an incredible performance together against Liverpool last night. They complemented each other very well and helped the team get the win. Hopefully, Erik ten Hag sticks with this duo at the back for the next fixtures because they look like an impenetrable force.
