Despite the important victory against West Ham on Sunday evening at Old Trafford, Manchester United was left in shock that a key player is likely to be let go at the end of the season. The news has rocked the fanbase, with a lot of large majority of them puzzled by the refusal of the United board to do the needful and keep the current team together.

Although United have been hugely praised for their attacking threat, much of the work is equally based on their tenacious defense setup that has succeeded in keeping a back-to-back clean sheet at Old Trafford. Varane and Lisandro have both stolen much of the media focus with their fine form at the heart of Ten Hag's defense ahead of David De Gea.

With four clean sheets and counting so far this season for De Gea, it is no surprise that fans were left dumbfounded when his contract extension talks with United still have remained non-existent. De Gea has been in terrific form and yet the club hasn't made any move to have it renewed. De Gea has kept five clean sheets this season with a total of 31 saves so far.

The Spaniard has started every game for Erik ten Hag this season and was instrumental to keep West Ham at bay on Sunday. The contract situation with De Gea leaves United with the opportunity to consider the option to replace their longest-serving number one in recent years. A decision to not extended his contract before January leave him with the chance to speak with other teams ahead of a switch.

SHOULD UNITED LET DE GEA GO?

The current form of the former Spain number one will certainly raise eyebrows should United decide to let him go, as there are very few goalkeepers in the world with such quality in goal. The decision to constantly start De Gea could be Ten Hag's way of persuading the club to extend his contract as he remains a crucial part of his united team.
